I was recently talking to a friend who was excited about her recent weight loss. She was following a specific program and after several frustrating weeks of not losing weight she tweaked the program to be less complicated to fit her lifestyle. Now, the weight is coming off with more ease and less stress.
Tip: There isn’t a one size fits all program. This not only applies to weight loss but to exercising, eating healthier and any changes you want to make in your life. As moms we want to go the easy route and have someone tell us exactly what we need to do. This may initially seem easy but often it will lead to frustration and then eventually you will give up because your not getting the results you expected. Instead, if it’s not working then change it. For example, if your regular route to work is taking you fifteen minutes longer because of some road construcition I bet you will find another route that will get you to work quicker rather than drive the same route. This goes for everything else in your life, you may be following a certain plan but if it doesn’t work for you and your lifestyle then take a different path.

I don’t know about you but the popcorn in those microwaveable bags are not so tasty. Also have you looked at the ingredients? It’s full of chemicals. So here is a healthier and tastier alternative:
Measure out 1/4 a cup of popcorn kernels in a paper bag. Fluff open the bag so there is room for the popped kernels. Fold the end of the bag a couple of times. Then put the bag in the microwate on high for about three minutes. Stop the microwave when the kernels are popping about 10 seconds a part. This will make about 4 1/2 cups of popcorn.
You can drizze some olive oil and sea salt or get fancier and add your favorite finely shredded sharp cheese. If you use sharp you can add less cheese but still have a wonderful flavor. Other seasonings you can try are garlic powder, pepper, red pepper flakes, sea salt and flavored olive oils.
Enjoy!!

I’m seriously considering eating only whole food; fruits, vegetables, legumes
For those who know me; I haven’t lost my mind. But over the course of several days last week I happen to meet several people who were Whole Food proponents who enlightened me to the negative impact on our environment as carnivores. As well as other recent experiences that has changed/challenged my thinking about eating meat. Also, the scientific research on the positive health impacts which are not widely known or publicized (that’s another topic about the politics of it all) are tremendous!
Thoughts to Ponder:
If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save:
● 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months;
● 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year;
● 70 million gallons of gas–enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare;
● 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware;
● 33 tons of antibiotics.
If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would prevent:
● Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2, as much as produced by all of France;
● 3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damages;
● 4.5 million tons of animal excrement;
● Almost 7 tons of ammonia emissions, a major air pollutant.

Last night I came home to my husband who was watching a documentary called, “King Corn”. This documentary follows two college friends who move to Iowa to grow and farm an acre of corn. In the process they examine the role of increasing production of corn on American Society which isn’t good. I didn’t see the whole show but what I did see was eye opening.
Specifically an interview with a veterinary doctor who stated that the amount of saturated fat found in the tissue of a corn fed cow was NINE times higher than a grass fed cow. Cows naturally eat grass not corn. So we force feed cows into a unnatural diet for the sake of economics and efficiency. As a result they grow ulcers which become tumors and then cancerous because they are fed a diet of corn which cows wouldn’t naturally eat in the wild. It’s like penguins eating broccoli. I’m not a vegetarian and I don’t necessarily eat organic meats. But this has got me definitely thinking about switching to eating only organic. Food for thought… No pun intended

As promised here is an explanation on the differences of “Good and Bad Fats”. I know as busy moms it can be a tough choice between picking up something quick and easy for dinner which may not be all that healthy or something that takes more time and effort to make. I wholeheartedly believe that moderation is the key. I hope the following information will help guide you in your families food choices.
Healthiest Fats
Olive oils, avocados and nuts are monounsaturated fats that are great to eat and are the mainstays in a Greek diet. Liquid corn oil and soybean oil are polyunsaturated fats and are much better than Crisco oil.
Not So Healthy Fats
Beef, pork, veal, butter, shortening, and cheese are saturated fats. There’s no need to take these foods out of your diet but rather have a smaller portion than if you ate some chicken or seafood.
So the healthier fats come from vegetables and cold water fish such as salmon and fats from most animals are what you want to limit.
You also want to limit trans fats (hydrogenated fats) which are found in stick margarine and in many processed foods such as crackers and cookies. Transfats are now shown on the nutrition labels found on most packaged foods.

I recently had a mom tell me that all most everything she eats is fat free. This isn’t a good thing. We need fat for energy, to help digest fat soluble vitamins and the cushioning of our organs. Also, a little bit of fat makes you feel fuller than without it. So you will ultimately not feel as hungry at the end of the day.
Our society has gone overboard in removing the fat in everything. For example, many fat free foods replace the fat with more sugar than their full or low fat counterpart. I noticed this in many baked good items and yogurts. The additional sugar causes a see saw effect on your body where you get a boost of energy then a huge crash leaving you feeling crummy and wanting more sugar. It’s a vicious cycle. So keep your overall fat intake fairly low but go ahead and have a full fat or low fat yogurt or that cookie just eat a little less and savor each bite!
Stay tuned.. On my next post I will explain the difference between “good fats and bad fats”.
